Following their 3-0 defeat at the Camp Nou, Bayern fans had been hoping for a Champions’ League miracle against Barcelona – and while the fires of hope would be stoked early on we all knew it was never going to be. Two away goals for the Catalans would quell any chance of a comeback, and it was left to Pep Guardiola’s side to see out their campaign on a high – duly achieved with a stirring performance to maintain their perfect home record in this year’s competition. Three quarters of the way into their Champions’ League semi-final against Barcelona, FC Bayern looked good to take a decent result back to Bavaria. Pep Guardiola’s side had kept out everything that their opponents could throw at them, and as the clock ticked past the seventy-five minute mark all was well. Then, two crushing blows in the space of three minutes turned the tie on its head, with a crippling – and completely avoidable – third goal coming in injury time. Continue reading FC Barcelona v FCB

Backs against the wall. Under pressure. Slap bang in the middle of an epic injury crisis, the week after the shock departure of the long established medical team. Staring Champions’ League elimination squarely in the face less than a week after one of the most miserable displays in years. The buildup could not have been any worse for FC Bayern München as they prepared to take on FC Porto in a make or break second leg. Continue reading FCB v FC Porto

FC Porto v FCB

FC Bayern took on FC Porto with a plan and with hopes of continuing their march towards the Champions’ League final in Berlin, but instead found themselves on the brink after a error-strewn and at times painful 3-1 defeat against an energetic opponent. Bayern had gone into the game with an eleven-game unbeaten record on Portuguese soil, but this counted for nothing as Porto left Die Roten with plenty of work to do in the return leg in Munich. It had started out as a potentially tricky encounter against an unpredictable banana skin, and ended with a gentle breeze. Up against ten men following the fastest dismissal in the history of the Champions’ League, FC Bayern showed their professional poise in seeing off Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk to claim a place in the quarter-finals. Fresh after their eight-goal demolition of Hamburger SV at the weekend, Bayern were back in Champions’ League action against Ukrainians Shakhtar Donetsk, but after an insipid and at times undisciplined performance they had to make do with a share of the spoils at the Arena L’viv against a solid but professionally cynical opponent. More than twenty Red Dragons made their way from London and beyond to Manchester’s Etihad Stadium for week five of the Champions’ league group stage, as Bayern looked to maintain their hundred percent record in this year’s competition. It was a game of dramatic twists and turns that would see the visiting Bayern fans shocked after twenty minutes, ecstatic at half-time and left simply speechless at the end. FCB v AS Roma

The meeting with AS Roma at the Allianz Arena was never going to be as spectacular as the record-breaking 7-1 triumph two weeks earlier at the Stadio Olimpico, but FC Bayern would book their place in the knockout stages two weeks early with a calm and measured performance that would only emphasise the gulf in class between the two teams. On a damp night in Munich, Bayern wouldn’t really need to go further than second gear to dispose of a solid but insipid Roma side. Continue reading FCB v AS Roma

AS Roma v FCB

FC Bayern would head to Rome for what would be billed as arguably the toughest match of the season so far, against an AS Roma side that had won its last five matches at the Stadio Olimpico. The visiting fans would be ecstatic when Arjen Robben netted the opener inside the first ten minutes, but this would only be the start as Die Roten swept everything before them. The visiting Red Dragons had expected a tightly-contested gladitorial contest, but would witness a bloody slaughter in what was another glorious evening for the men from Munich.
